Consider connecting with an Intuitive Eating Counsellor and/or Registered Dietitian who specialises in disordered eating and eating disorders so that as parents, you can explore your own relationship with food and better understand disordered eating as your loved one starts to work on recovery.
Intuitive Eating
Before diving into resources,
I strongly recommend seeing your youth’s GP or Paediatrician and requesting a referral to your local ED Program. If your loved one is under 16, I also recommend advocating for a referral to a paediatrician for more specialized care and assessment. Once you have set up regular medical monitoring, please start exploring these resources as soon as possible. Early intervention and treatment for eating disorders leads to the best recovery outcomes for your loved one.
It is normal for a youth or individual struggling with an eating disorder to be in denial about being sick and to lack insight around the severity of their illness - they may be defensive and feel loved ones and/or medical professionals are overreacting, however, they will eventually be grateful and happy that parents and professionals intervened as intensely and as early as possible.
